IP or internet protocol camera is a kind of digital video camera which is basically used for surveillance. It directly gets connected to the Wi-Fi network and it does not always depend on a computer for working. The date captured data from an IP camera is transmitted through the network and can be securely accessed at the other place. These types of cameras are usually plug-and-play, which simply needs the power supply and wireless network.

How wireless IP camera works?

Basically, a wireless IP camera requires a good speed network from a wireless router and continuous power supply. Also for first time setup, we need to connect it to a PC which is connected to the same router. However, the camera works independently of the computer after first time setup. This kind of camera is easy to setup and portable.

To setup wireless IP camera in our private network, we need to follow some basic steps:

  • Connect the camera to the LAN port of the wireless router using Ethernet cable provided with the camera set.
  • Now go to a PC which is connected to the same router and run the IP setup wizard using the CD/DVD provided with the camera.
  • After opening IP setup wizard select the camera from the list and check for the IP address just near to it.
  • Now open a web browser and type the IP address in its address bar and press enter. This will open the browser interface of the camera and it will prompt for username and password, so check for it in the user manual (in most of the camera systems it is ‘admin’ by default).
  • After login to the browser interface go to network settings and enable the Wireless option. Now follow the steps below to setup wireless settings:
  1. Select the authentication type (Automatic/ WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK) and enter the correct password of the wireless router.
  2. Now check mark the option related to obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically and click OK.
  3. Now reboot the camera from the basic settings. It may take 100 to 120 seconds to reboot the camera.
  • Now we can check the IP address for the camera which is assigned by the wireless router. So just save this IP address as it will help to access the camera wirelessly
  • Once we get the IP address, just unplug the Ethernet cable from the camera and the router. The camera is now wirelessly connected to the wireless router.

So once the set up of wireless camera is completed, we can access it wirelessly from any device connected to the same network. Just type the IP address (provided by router) in the address bar of web browser and access the camera.

Some of the wireless camera manufacturers also provide android and iOS based applications to setup the camera. So we just need to follow the on-screen instructions to setup.

Note: The above-provided steps are common for setting up any IP camera; however, there might be some difference in options provided by different companies, but we can easily find the options if we carefully look for it.

Some Advantages of using Wireless IP Camera:

  1. Easy installation and quick setup.
  2. Low-cost investment.
  3. Easy to access from any device.
  4. Comes with motion sensor and night vision technology.
  5. Two-way communication.
  6. Wireless IP cameras also can be easily accessed from a remote location using the internet by just obtaining WAN IP address.

So if you are planning to set up a monitoring system for home, shop, office, etc at the minimal budget, then wireless IP camera is one of the best available options. It not only save the setup time but also save a lot of money by reducing the cost of wires and other recording equipment.
