Do not save changed icon position on desktop (For All Users)

Users can change the positions of icons and place them anywhere on the desktop. Windows saves such settings even when the user logs off or restarts the system. This setting can let you disable such feature.

Normally, users can change the positions of icons and place them anywhere on the desktop. Windows saves such settings even when the user logs off or restarts the system. This setting can let you disable such feature and will display all the icons at the default position.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\Explorer” is not present, create it as explained below. Then, create a string value “NoSaveSettings” in the right panel.

Now, right-click and modify its value to “1” which can disable icons position settings. However, if you want enable the option back, change the value data to “0” or delete the added value.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\], key and create a new key with the name "Explorer" under "Policies".

Now, right-click in the open area to create a DWORD Value with the name "NoSaveSettings" in "Explorer" key.

Next, right-click on "NoSaveSettings" and click on 'Modify'.

Finally, enter the value "1" in the text box and click on 'OK'.

Remove “Active Desktop” item from Settings in the Start menu (For Current User in Win 98/Me).

This setting enables you to remove the menu item “Active Desktop” from Settings in the Start menu.

Prevent the disabling of the Active Desktop (Current User).
