Disable using Web services for unknown file types.

If you open an unknown file type, Windows will prompt to use the Web service to find the associated application. This setting enables you evade the step and go directly to the programs list.

Tweak for : Windows XP, Windows 2003
If an unknown file type is opened, Windows starts Web Service dialog to find the associated application. This setting enables the user to go directly to the program list.

The web service picks up the information about file name extensions, file types and the applications to use with them and provide the user the ability to open a file. The operating system has the ability to open the file type with the associated application or component.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. you can create a DWORD value name “NoInternetOpenWith”, in the right panel, if this value does not exist.

Now, right-click and modify its value to “1” which can disable Web service. However, if you do not want to show the "Open With.." dialog instantly, change the value data to “0” or delete the added value.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

Show 'open with' for unknown file extension.reg

The '.reg' file can show 'Open With' dialog for unknown file extension.

Show Web Service with unknown file extension (Default).reg

The '.reg' file will show Web Service dialog with unknown file extensions.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

‘Open With’ dialog box is called on opening the unknown file extensions.

Web Service dialog box is enabled by default with unknown file extension.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policie s\System\],right-click in the open area to create a DWORD Value with the name "NoInternetOpenWith" in "System" key.

Next, right-click on "NoInternetOpenWith" and click on 'Modify'.

Finally, enter the value "1" in the text box and click on 'OK'.
