The sizes of the icons can be changed to suit your requirements on the desktop.
For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. Create a REG_SZ string value name "Shell Icon Size" (if this value doesn't exist). Right Click on the Option “Shell Icon Size”, and from the drop down menu, select Modify. Enter the value given below:

Delete this entry for default windows icon size.
Restart your system.
NOTE: this will also affect your Start Menu and the Large Icon view in Windows Explorer.
