Show special icons for “.CPL” files.

Windows show normally “.CPL” files with the default generic icon, but you can specify that Windows should use the icons inside each file.

Tweak for : Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows Vista

Description:

Windows show normally “.CPL” files with the default generic icon, but you can specify that Windows should use the icons inside each file.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\DefaultIcon” does not exist, create it as explained below. Now, right-click and modify the data of “Default” string value to “%1” which can show special icons for “.CPL” files. However, if you want to revert to default icons look delete the value.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

NOTE:
This setting can reduce the performance of your system and if a file has no icon in itself, Windows will display the file with the generic icon.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

Special icons are displayed for ".CPL" files.

Default icons for ".CPL" files.

First, click the Start button, and select Run. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit"

Second, go to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cplfile] and create a new key 'DefaultIcon'.

Now, right click on the String value 'Default' under the key 'DefaultIcon' and select 'Modify'.

Finally set the value data as '%1' and click 'OK'.
