Restrict saving a file from the “File Download” dialog on a website.

You can control some features and behaviors of Internet Explorer. One of them is to turn off the file saving command while initiating the file download process on any website, through Internet Explorer.

Tweak for : Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows Vista

Description:

When a file is processed to download from any website, Internet Explorer launches the “File Download” dialog box, which gives the option to save the file on your computer. But with this tweak, you can turn off the feature to save the file.

Important:
Even if you turn on file saving option in the “File Download” dialog, all the open Internet Explorer windows will not show the effect.

For this, go to Start > Run, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. You can create a DWORD value “NoSelectDownloadDir” at HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry paths, if this value does not exist.

Now, right-click and modify the value to “1” which can restrict saving a file from the “File Download” dialog in Internet Explorer. However, if you want to get back to the original state, change the value to “0”.

Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect. However, for Windows 98 users, the changes will take effect only after a restart or logoff of your computer.

This feature works on Internet Explorer version 5 and above.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

File downloading from any website is restricted with the use of this tweak. It generates an error message when you attempt to download file from website.

Downloading of a file from any website is possible with a simple click on the download button/link of the website. Further, it prompts to either Save/Open the file from the main location.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\] key and create a new key with the name "Internet Explorer" under "Microsoft".

Then, create a "Restrictions" key under "Internet Explorer".

Now, right-click in the open area to create a DWORD Value with the name "NoSelectDownloadDir" in "Restrictions" key.

The created DWORD value will look like below.

Next, right-click on the "NoSelectDownloadDir" DWORD value and click on 'Modify'.

Finally, enter the value "1" in the text-box provided and click on 'OK'. Once you are done, follow the above steps to create similar registry keys and DWORD value at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\].
