‘Desktop’ icon is removed from the places bar.
‘Desktop’ icon is visible by default in the places bar.
First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".
Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 \Common\Open Find\Places\StandardPlaces\Desktop\],right-click in the open area to create a DWORD Value with the name "Show" in "Desktop" key.
Next, right-click on "Show" and click on 'Modify'.
Finally, enter the value "0" (Base Hexadecimal) without quotation in the text box and click on 'OK'. Once you are done. After a restart or logoff, the changes take effect.
