Windows Installer use logging to help in any problem with installing software packages. This is done by adding keys and values to the registry. After the entries have been added and enabled, installation is done again to find whether Windows Installer is able to track the progress and it saves it to Temp folder. The new log's file name begins with the letters Msi and end with a .log extension.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If the subkey “\Windows\Installer” is not present, create it as explained below. Edit / Create a new REG_SZ (String Value) called Logging and append or set it to a letter “u” to enable Initial All Error Messages logging option. The letters in the value field can be in any order. Click “OK” and close the registry editor.

Re-start the system.

Each letter turns on a different logging mode. Each letter's actual function is as follows for MSI version 1.1.
* - Wildcard, log all information except for the v option. To include the v == option, specify /l*v.

The next time Windows Installer is used a log will be created.

Note:
This should be used only for troubleshooting purposes and should not be left on because it will have adverse effects on system performance and disk space. Each time you use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, a new Msi*.log file is created.
