Disable automatic updates for Windows Media Player.

This setting disables automatic update for Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher version.

Windows Media Player plays digital media like CDs and DVDs to give the best experience of audio/video albums and Internet Radio. It checks periodically for updates but this setting allows you to disable this feature in Windows Media Player.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. You can create a DWORD value “DisableAutoUpdate” under “WindowsMediaPlayer” key, if this value does not exist. Now, right-click and modify the value data to “1”. This registry setting should be used if you are working on Windows Media Player 7.0 and above.

Else, create a String value “EnableAutoUpgrade” under “MediaPlayer” key and right-click to modify it value to “no”, when the version of Windows Media Player is 6.4 or earlier.

The changes take effect after a restart or logoff.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

The "Automatic Updates" for Windows Media Player is disabled after the changes.

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Second, go to the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\] key, right-click and click on the "New > Key" to create a new key with the name "WindowsMediaPlayer".

Third, right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > DWORD Value" to create a new DWORD value with the name "DisableAutoUpdate".

Fourth, right-click on the 'DisableAutoUpdate' DWORD value and click on "Modify".

Fifth, enter the value "1" in the text box and click on 'OK'.

Sixth, go to the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\] key, right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > String Value" to create a new String value with the name "EnableAutoUpgrade".

Seventh, right-click on the 'EnableAutoUpgrade' String value and click on "Modify".

Eighth, enter the value "no" in the text box and click on 'OK'.

Disable automatic codec downloads for Windows Media Player.
