“System Restore” will undo the changes made to the registry and restore the registry state to an earlier date/time. “System Restore” can automatically create restore points (also called system checkpoints) when it monitors changes to the registry like installing new programs etc. You can also create your own restore point when you are about to make some major changes in the registry.

This setting enables you to turn the “System Restore” utility off. However, turning the utility off shall not remove the existing restore points.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and search the keys listed below. Now, right-click and modify the DWORD value “Start” to “4” which can turn the “System Restore” utility off.

However, if you want to enable back the “System Restore” option, change the value to “2”.

Refresh view of your computer for the changes to take effect.

NOTE:
If you create a restore point, Windows will save the current registry state of your system. If for example an installation corrupts your registry, you can restore your system through this utility.
