Turn off “System Restore” facility.

“System Restore” can undo the changes made to the registry and restore it to the “last known good” registry state. But, this setting features to turn off this utility.

Tweak for : Windows XP, Windows Vista

Description:

“System Restore” will undo the changes made to the registry and restore the registry state to an earlier date/time. “System Restore” can automatically create restore points (also called system checkpoints) when it monitors changes to the registry like installing new programs etc. You can also create your own restore point when you are about to make some major changes in the registry.

This setting enables you to turn the “System Restore” utility off. However, turning the utility off shall not remove the existing restore points.

For this, go to Start > Run menu, enter “regedit” and navigate to the registry path listed below. If any of the subkey “\SystemRestore” does not exist, create it as explained below. Now, create a DWORD value “DisableConfig” and set it value data to “1” which can turn the “System Restore” utility off.

However, if you want to enable back the “System Restore” option, change the value to “0”.

Remember:
In Windows Vista, if you change the value to “0” it will disable creating a restore point, where as when you delete the added value it will hide the “System Protection” tab from System Properties dialog box.

Refresh view of your computer for the changes to take effect.

NOTE:
If you create a restore point, Windows will save the current registry state of your system. If for example an installation corrupts your registry, you can restore your system through this utility.

Disable System Restore Utility.reg

The ".reg" file can disable "System Restore" utility.

The ".reg" file can enable "System Restore" utility.

Apply registry settings according below given steps of screenshots with related changes.

"System Restore" utility option is disabled.

"System Restore" utility option is enabled by default and it can be accessed by going to [Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore].

First, click the 'Start' button, and select 'Run'. In the resulting dialog box, type "regedit".

Second, go to the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\] key, right-click and click on "New > Key" to create a new key with the name "SystemRestore".

Third, right-click on the blank area in the right pane and click on "New > DWORD Value" to create a new DWORD value with the name "DisableConfig".

Fourth, right-click on the 'DisableConfig' DWORD value and click on "Modify".

Finally, enter the value "1" in the text box and click on'OK'.
